although the fire escape is not usually thought of as a symbol, it is an excellent choice in this play. the fire escape shows how hard living back then was for some people. it shows how beat up the wingfield apartment is, the only reason they use the fire escape is because they cannot use the front door. i think that the fire escape relates to the characters because it symbolizes their way of life where they cannot take the easy way, the front door, but they have to take the hard way, the fire escape. another way that the fire escape is used in the play is when laura slips on her way out to the store, this shows how laura is not used to how to write a college worthy essay world outside of her home.
